Alamo Winnipeg Airport
Winnipeg International Airport is one of the most important airports in Canada, and one of the busiest as well. Although its passenger traffic is nowhere near as immense as Toronto or Vancouver, it is still rated as the eight busiest in the country. Its passengers exceed three million per annum, and it is a hub for Perimeter Aviation, Calm Air and Kivallig Air, as well as a focus city for Air Canada Express. The airport is referred to by its code of YWG. Car hire companies are available in the terminal, such as Alamo. This company is often chosen by persons travelling for leisure purposes, and offers some of the lowest car rental rates in the industry.
The car rental companies of Winnipeg’s airport can be found at the parkade building, on the main level, however, a few such as Alamo have rental offices a short distance from the main terminal building. A shuttle is therefore required for travel to collect the rented vehicle. The shuttles are operated by the car rental companies, and are frequently available. They can usually easily accommodate a passenger’s luggage items, and are equipped to transport a person with disabilities. The shuttles are also available free of charge. The main terminal building of Winnipeg Airport is where the majority of passengers will arrive, and is well equipped with facilities. It is also easy to navigate. However, passengers who are flying with Kivallig Air or Perimeter Aviation may arrive at one of the other two smaller terminal buildings, which are a kilometre or two from the main building. Transport may be available to the main terminal of the airport.
Alamo Winnipeg International Airport is open at various hours, seven days a week. On Sundays and Mondays their hours of operation are from 06:30 to 23:59, on Tuesdays they are open from 06:00 to 23:59 and from Wednesdays to Saturdays they are available from 06:30 to 23:59. Arriving passengers will almost always find these times to be convenient, however, Alamo may also offer out-of-office hour services for early morning arrivals or for returns. To collect a vehicle from the airport, the primary renter will need to be at least 21 years of age, and should carry a valid drivers license and major credit card.
The minimum age to rent a car is actually 25, however, younger drivers are also permitted, provided that they are charged for young drivers insurance. This could amount to around $35.00 CAD per day of car hire, and per young driver registered on the rental agreement. Younger drivers will find they have a choice of several car categories, but may not be permitted to hire from Luxury, Premium, SUV, Convertible or Minivan categories. The cars available to young drivers will vary from company to company. The drivers license provided should not be a G1 or G2 Canadian license, and should be written in English. License from the United States are therefore usually accepted. Persons from foreign countries may need to apply for an International Driving Permit before leaving for Winnipeg. They may also require further documents, such as a passport and proof of their return to their home country. In terms of payment, the major credit cards accepted include American Express, Diner’s Club Int’l, Discover, Mastercard, Visa and GE Capital, amongst others. This card will need to be produced at the start of the rental period, but a debit card for the final payment may be accepted.
The Winnipeg International Airport car rental companies, including Alamo, have cars available in Economy, Compact, Midsize, Standard, Fullsize, Premium, Luxury, SUV and Minivan categories. Vehicles in the first few categories mentioned are available at lower prices, and are smaller cars with room for four passengers and a few luggage items. They include the Suzuki Swift, Nissan Versa and Dodge Caliber. Although smaller than others, they do come with air conditioning, AM/FM Stereo and CD and an automatic transmission. Standard and Fullsize cars are larger, and similar to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Impala, and Premium and Luxury cars are ideal for persons who need to create an excellent impression or for those who simply like to drive a more elegant car. Examples include the Buick Allure and Chrysler 300C.
From Alamo, groups of travellers will find the Dodge Grand Caravan to be a wonderful vehicle for their journey, as it seats up to seven passengers. This minivan also comes with cruise control and power locks, windows and mirrors. SUVs that can also seat seven people are the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban, and SUVs for five include the Ford Escape and Ford Explorer. One of Alamo’s largest vehicles is the Chevrolet Express, with room for up to fifteen passengers. The majority of rented cars can be arranged as an Alamo one way hire from Winnipeg International Airport. One way hires are useful for passengers who do not plan to return to this airport location. Cross-border rentals may also be permitted, and are needed for when the vehicle will be driven out of Canada and into the United States of America.
All vehicles from this car rental location are recommended to be hired in advance, and preferably online, as the best rental rates are then secured. At the time of reservation, also specify all additional items of equipment required, such as child seats or satellite navigation systems. Alamo hand controls are also available for drivers with a lower limb disability, and are possible to use free of charge from Winnipeg Airport. Hand controls are available on certain vehicles with an automatic transmission. Contact Alamo for all further details required.
