Car Hire at Kelowna Airport - Information
Kelowna International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Canada, and is located just a few miles from the city centre of Kelowna, in British Columbia. The airport is known by its IATA code of YLW, which the airport also uses for an acronym standing for ‘Your Link to the World’, and around 1.39 million passengers pass through it every year. Many of these passengers are tourists, as well as business professionals, who need some form of transport in the city. A rented car from one of the Kelowna International Airport car hire companies is considered as convenient, and as an excellent way to travel the area or to drive between places of business. Reasonable car rental rates are also offered to airport passengers.
The YLW airport consists of just a single terminal building with all facilities required for arriving and departing passengers. It is therefore quite easy to navigate, and passengers will find many useful amenities within walking distance of the baggage claim area. The airport’s car rental companies are also nearby to baggage claim, and inside the terminal building. They include Budget, Avis, National, Enterprise and Auto Europa. Since that these companies are inside the terminal, there is no need to take any shuttle buses or other forms of transport once you arrive at the airport. The vehicles of the rental companies are also parked on the airport grounds, at the south end of the short-term car park. Passengers can hire a car directly over the rental counters of these companies, but often an advanced online reservation will result in lower car rental rates. An early booking also brings peace of mind that your ideal car is ready and waiting for your collection.
The car hire companies of the airport all have many years of experience in the industry, and have rental locations around the world and at all major airport centres. Enterprise is the only company that is not worldwide, as their focus have been on locations in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Germany and the United Kingdom. They are however, an excellent choice for business or leisure rentals, and offer a few programs that have time and money saving benefits. Avis is one of the favourite car hire companies of the world, with good customer service and high quality vehicles. Their prices are reasonable, and the Avis Preferred Program is ideal for frequent renters. National and Auto Europa have high quality vehicles as well, and Budget is well known for their ‘budget’ car rental rates and vehicles that can be specifically booked by their makes and models, rather than by just category.
To hire a car in Kelowna, and Canada in general, the primary renter should be 21 years of age or older. Certain vehicle categories are, however, unavailable to persons younger than 25. These categories are often those containing luxury cars, convertibles, large SUVs, passenger vans and special cars. Younger renters will usually need to settle for an Economy, Compact, Intermediate or Fullsize car, such as the Hyundai Accent, Suzuki Swift, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent Sedan, Dodge Caliber, Chrysler 200 Sedan, Ford Fusion or Chevrolet Impala. Although their choices are slightly limited, these cars are ideal for city or long distance driving, and have automatic transmissions. They can also seat between four and five passengers, store a couple of luggage items and may come with air conditioning, power locks and windows, airbags and cruise control. Keep in mind that younger drivers pay higher rental rates, for young drivers insurance.
Primary renters or additional drivers listed on the rental contract have access to the same and all other vehicle categories. Minivans are a popular choice for groups of travellers, as they seat seven or eight passengers, SUVs can be ideal for travelling as well and are available in standard, midsize, fullsize and premium categories, and crossovers and pickups can be hired. Examples of minivans include the Dodge Grand Caravan and Ford Sienna, SUVs include the Ford Escape, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban and Lincoln Navigator, while crossovers are similar to the Ford Edge. One of the larger vehicles available for hire from the Kelowna International Airport car rental companies is the Chevrolet Express, with room for up to fifteen passengers.
The primary renter of a vehicle will require one of the accepted major credit cards in his/her name, as debit cards are not permitted at the start of the rental period. All drivers will also need to show a valid driving license - one that has been issued either in Canada or in the United States of America. However, most licenses printed in English are accepted. Find out from your car hire company the documents required if you are from a foreign country where English is not the predominant language.
When reserving a vehicle from Kelowna International Airport, one way hire services can be arranged, and child seats and satellite navigation systems can be requested. These services and items of equipment will have extra charges, but could be a vital part of your holiday or business trip in Kelowna. Child seats are obviously essential for safety, and a GPS unit could be highly advantageous. The units hired are of the highest quality, come with a selection of languages, offer accurate and turn-by-turn directions, supply information about traffic and road constructions and are pre-programmed with points of interest, which are useful for finding attractions, hotels, restaurants, medical facilities and places of business in the vicinity of Kelowna Airport. Hand controls for disabled drivers are possible to arrange as well. This device is free of charge, but will require an advanced reservation.
Driving in Canadian cities such as Kelowna is quite straight forward. Simply follow the road rules and signs, and don’t exceed the set speed limits. In general, the speed limits are 30mph/50kph in urban areas, 63mph or 100kph on open roads and 81mph or 130kph on motorways and highways. The airport is conveniently located just off Highway 97, from where the city centre is just a ten minute drive. The highway also continues north to Vernon, and south towards West Kelowna, Summerland, Penticton and Okanagan Falls.
